DoubleDutch Games is a small Dutch indie game development team, consisting of Casper van Est and Gert-Jan Stolk. Since neither of them has any skills, they often work with other people to make their games.

Early history

DoubleDutch Games was founded in 2010 by Casper van Est and Gert-Jan Stolk, who met each other while working for Coded Illusions, a game development studio based in Rotterdam which went bankrupt in 2008. After that, they both went to work at the University of Delft, developing Serious Games for the likes of Shell and ProRail. However, the desire to create entertainment games was still there, so after creating a prototype of a game called Speedrunner, they decided to start their own company.

That little prototype was then developed further into a complete game, with the help of former colleagues and friends Jonathan v/d Wijngaarden, Gerrit Willemse and Frank Post. With the game now being playable in browsers around the world using the magic of Adobe’s Flash, Casper and Gert-Jan placed the game up for auction on FlashGameLicense.com. There it quickly gathered interest from the web’s biggest flash game portals. Eventually, MaxGames.com offered the best bid and ended up sponsoring the game and in the process provided the team with enough money to further develop the game for consoles.

Speedrunner HD

While the flash game was doing well on the internet, reaching an audience of millions, the console version of the game, called Speedrunner HD, was released in August 2011 as part of the Xbox Live Indie Games Summer Uprising. This version included higher resolution graphics, more levels and a four-player multiplayer mode. The team also submitted the game to Microsoft’s Dream.Build.Play competition, where it reached the semi-finals. Upon release, the game quickly received high review scores from the press, who praised the new multiplayer mode. However, sales turned out to be a bit disappointing, which is a familiar complaint among Xbox Live Indie Games developers. Perhaps the relatively high price point ($3) and short singleplayer campaign were to blame. Casper and Gert-Jan still kept their hopes high, though, as they received an email from Valve, who saw the trailer online, saying they were interested in bringing the game to Steam.

Currently, the team is working on bringing Speedrunner HD to Steam, while simultaneously developing their new game, Chaos Battle, with help from artist Robin Keijzer. At the same time, Casper and Gert-Jan are still working part-time as a game design teacher and serious game developer respectively. With any luck, their games will be well received so they can bring DoubleDutch Games to the next level!
